Fruit tree

We are not sure exactly what type of citrus tree this is, but we think it is a tangerine. The tree must have 50 small green "tangerines" and maybe twenty that are ripe.

I love the color of these roses.

Drag-A-Rag Progress

This is a picture of both sides of the blanket after the ragging was finished. Only one step left--to wash and dry it. It will make the quilt softer and more "raggy".

After many attempts I figured out how to add the purple ruffle. I wanted it to have the rag seam on one side and a finished seam on the other--so it was a puzzle! After I added the ruffle I had to snip all the seams to rag them. This picture is before the ragging.

I finished snipping all the seams of the quilt. The next step was to snip the border, but I wasn't sure I would like that so I am now making a purple flannel ruffle to use as the border.

Do you know who set the standard for fine watch-making for most of the 20th Century? If you answered, "The Swiss," you are correct. Swiss wrist watches dominated world markets for at least 60 years and Swiss companies were committed to constant refinement of their craft.

It was the Swiss who came forward with the minute hand and the second hand. They led the world in discovering better ways to manufacture the gears, bearings, and mainsprings of watches. They even led the way in waterproofing techniques and self-winding models. By 1968, the Swiss made 65 percent of all watches sold in the world and laid claim to as much as 90 percent of the profits.

Now...which country sold the most wrist watches in the 1980s? The answer is Japan. By 1980, Swiss companies had laid off thousands of watch-makers and controlled less than 10 percent of the world market. Their profit domination dropped to less than 20 percent.

Between 1979 and 1981, eighty percent of Swiss watchmakers lost their jobs. Why? The Swiss had refused to change the way they traditionally designed watches and utilize the less expensive and more accurate Quartz crystal. (Quartz movement, ironically, was invented by a Swiss.) They did not seriously experiment with a radical new way of designing timepieces.

Our lives are not so different. Without constant experimentation -- daily growth and change to become the best we can be -- our old attitudes, behaviors and skills will no longer work for us. The old ways of thinking and doing will be about as relevant as a grandfather clock on a space shuttle. We need to experiment and improve. We need to turn our lives into an active science.

New Products We Like At Our House

Dreyers Grand Light Slow Churned

We decided to try this ice cream when we saw it reviewed on a local TV morning show. It is very creamy and light. The consistency seems to be like cool whip. It seems almost like cotton candy. It is very difficult to make an ice cream cone with, because it is so sticky. We like the flavor and it is not sticky to eat. We have finished one carton of vanilla and we are now trying neopolitan.

Hillshire Farms Deli Select Combos

Because we don't eat alot of lunch meat, we don't finish all the lunch meat before the expiration date. The same thing happens when we buy a package of swiss or provolone cheese. This is a wonderful solution. Each reusable "Glad" container contains enough cheese and lunch meat to make 4 whole sandwiches. We have tried the turkey & provolone and the ham & swiss cheese. Although it tends to be a little bit expensive, there is no waste and the container is a bonus.

Downy Wrinkle Releaser

I don't know how I ironed without this!!! My friend Laurie had recommended it long ago and I never tried it. This summer we are living with very hard water and I have quite a few shirts and blouses that I don't put in the dryer. The linen and knit shirts tend to be very wrinkled. I spray the item well when I turn the iron on to heat and come back in 5 minutes to iron and it is a pleasure!!! The shirts seem to not wrinkle as easy during wear also. This is quite a time saver!!! It also has a pleasant fresh air smell and doesn't stiffen the fabric like starch does.

Kite flying

This is a picture of Don with the kite. Helping Andy getting ready to launch once again.

Andy really enjoys flying the kite. "A new hobby." He can keep the kite up for quite awhile and do figure 8's. In the picture below you can see the kite in front of the tree in the upper right corner.

All squares sewn together. Now the "ragging" will begin. This means lots of little 1/4" cuts in every seam!!!!

Thanks to Aunt Maryann for returning the RSVP for the 50th anniversary celebration. It was the first one I got back and all the way from Iron Mountain in just one week!!!

Picture problem

I am having trouble getting a series of pictures in order in the blog. I am trying different things--anyone have suggestions.

Bookmark keepsake and reminder.

This is the front of the invitation

The invitations are finished and have been mailed. Everyone should receive them soon.Each invitation includes a photo folder with pictures taken on the day of the wedding and one taken last summer. Also included in the invitation is a bookmark with smaller sticker pictures and the date and time of the dinner. The bookmark also includes all of the kids phone numbers.

The date for RSVP is July 23rd. I included a stamped envelope to return the menu selection for each guest.
